Clay County Citizens Inititiatives are at RISK!! Please Help.
Our citizens' group, Citizens For Term Limits & Accountability Committee, has worked tirelessly to sponsor charter amendments that give citizens more power and control over county government. You can view all three on the SOE website: http://www.clayelections.com/Amendments.html. Over 20,000 One amendment reduces and sets commissioners' salaries and provides that any salary changes must be approved by voters. Another amendment requires a 60% voter approval for all future charter amendments, encouraging more citizen participation. The last amendment abolishes the 2 at-large seats, one being the new Chair, reducing the number of commissioners from 7 to 5, all five being single-member district commissioners. Whether you are for or against these initiatives, NO citizen should willingly give up their right to vote and leave it to the courts to decide. This could set a dangerous precedent not only in Clay County, but in Florida and the rest of the Country. A recent lawsuit has been filed against Citizens For Term Limits & Accountability Committee by local citizen, Roy Lyons, seeking to block our 3 proposed charter amendments from the November, 2008 ballot. Our amendments are consistent with our goal of giving citizens more power and control over county government. We believe these complaints are without merit but we must defend ourselves in court.
